Santa Clara County voters approve Measure D open space tax

Santa Clara County voters approved Measure D, a parcel tax designed to fund the protection of open space, wildlife habitat, water resources and agricultural land across much of the county. The measure establishes a tax of 2 cents per square foot of building area, capped at $7,500 per parcel, with revenue supporting land conservation and public access projects managed by the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority. Supporters say the funding will help preserve natural areas as development pressures continue to grow throughout Silicon Valley. For local residents, the measure could lead to expanded trail access, habitat restoration projects and long-term protection of open spaces, while property owners within the authority’s boundaries will see the new tax applied. Redwood City delays decision on rent control proposal

The Redwood City City Council postponed a decision on a proposed rent control and tenant protection ordinance after a lengthy public meeting that drew strong opinions from both supporters and opponents. Councilmembers requested additional analysis of the proposal's potential fiscal impacts and are expected to revisit the issue within 30 days. The initiative, backed by Faith in Action Bay Area, would cap annual rent increases at 5% for many multifamily buildings constructed before February 1995 and could appear on the November ballot if not adopted directly. For renters and property owners alike, the delay means continued uncertainty as city leaders weigh the potential effects on housing affordability, tenant protections and the local rental market.
