Redwood City approves more than 20 zoning changes to encourage housing and development

Redwood City has approved more than 20 amendments to its zoning code aimed at making it easier to build new housing and commercial projects while streamlining the development process. Many of the changes update outdated regulations, simplify permit requirements, and align local rules with recent state housing laws designed to increase housing production. The amendments affect development citywide, including mixed-use corridors and areas planned for future growth, with officials saying they will provide greater clarity for developers while maintaining design standards. For residents, the updates could help accelerate new housing projects, businesses, and redevelopment proposals over the coming years while reducing approval delays. Read more here.

New state law opens the door for taller housing near Caltrain stations

A new California law is set to reshape development around Caltrain stations by allowing significantly taller residential buildings near major transit stops, overriding some local zoning restrictions. Communities including Redwood City will need to comply with the legislation, which is intended to increase housing supply close to public transportation and reduce dependence on cars. The law could affect areas surrounding the Downtown Redwood City Caltrain Station and other qualifying transit hubs as developers pursue higher-density housing proposals. For locals, the change may bring more housing options and support transit ridership, though residents can also expect ongoing discussions about neighborhood character, infrastructure, and growth. Buzz and Brew opens next to Redwood Grill

The team behind Redwood Grill has expanded with the opening of Buzz and Brew, a new cafรฉ located right next door. The coffee shop serves handcrafted espresso drinks, specialty coffees, teas, smoothies, and a selection of fresh pastries and light bites, creating a convenient spot for breakfast, a midday break, or an afternoon pick-me-up. With neighboring businesses under the same ownership, visitors can easily stop by for coffee before or after a meal at Redwood Grill. The new cafรฉ adds another locally owned option to the neighborhood's growing dining scene.
