Baylands Habitat & Flood Protection Gets a Natural Boost

Palo Alto is testing an innovative “horizontal living levee” along the Baylands Natural Preserve that blends habitat restoration with flood protection. Instead of traditional concrete barriers, this new embankment uses grasses and native plants to slow water and help capture sediments, which could make shoreline communities more resilient to rising tides and extreme storms.

The project also treats wastewater naturally, filtering nutrients before returning water to the Bay, which could improve water quality over time. Locals have been actively involved, planting vegetation and helping shape the design, making this a true community effort. If successful, this approach might be a model for other Bay Area cities facing similar climate challenges.

City Council Looking to Close Unsafe Rail Crossing

The Palo Alto City Council is set to explore the possible closure of the Churchill Avenue rail crossing after strong community urging. Safety concerns and traffic backups near the tracks have fueled debate for years, especially with increased train activity in the corridor. City leaders plan to study potential impacts, including how closures might redirect cars into nearby neighborhoods. Residents who travel through the area should expect continued discussion, and possible changes, in the months ahead. Read more here.

Palo Alto Housing Development

The City Council in Palo Alto is reviewing the timeline for downtown housing development that would replace an existing apartment building. The proposed project features 70 condominium units with a community library, fitness center, dining hall, and solar panels. This project is the latest in a string of major residential proposals in Palo Alto, responding to the city’s housing vision. Read more here.
