Palo Alto Budget Plans Would Reduce Crossing Guards & Raise Recreation Fees
City officials are proposing changes to the 2026-27 budget that could see fewer school crossing guards and higher fees for recreation programs. While the moves are aimed at tightening finances and balancing costs, they may directly affect families who rely on guards for student safety or who participate in city sports and classes. The proposal is part of a broader look at where budget cuts or revenue enhancements might be needed. Community feedback will be important as the City Council refines the plan over the coming months.

East Palo Alto Raises Fees for Parking Violations
East Palo Alto is increasing fines for parking violations, a move city officials say will help cover enforcement costs and improve local parking management. Drivers should be aware that common infractions like overtime parking will now cost more, and enforcement activity may be stepped up. The extra revenue is intended to support city services tied to transportation and street maintenance. Anyone who drives or parks regularly in East Palo Alto should check the new fee schedule to avoid surprises. Read more here.
Pedestrian Upgrades Coming to Embarcadero Road This Summer
Later this summer, pedestrian safety improvements will begin on Embarcadero Road between Alma Street and Emerson Avenue in Palo Alto. Plans include upgraded crosswalks, expanded sidewalks, new lighting and other enhancements designed to make walking safer and more comfortable. These changes aim to calm traffic and improve connectivity for people on foot or bikes in the area. Expect some construction disruption, but long-term benefits for anyone who walks or bikes along this busy stretch. Read more here.
Menlo Park Raises Fees Sharply to Ease Budget Pressures
Menlo Park’s City Council has approved a sweeping increase in city fees, from building permits to childcare program costs, with some jumping by more than 300%. The changes aim to close an anticipated budget gap and shift more of the cost of services onto users rather than general revenue. Residents and small businesses may feel these increases directly if they rely on city services or plan projects this year. City officials say the changes are necessary but acknowledge community concerns about affordability. Read more here.
