Los Altos Begins Process to Annex Fire Services

The city of Los Altos has started formal steps to annex its fire department into the Santa Clara County Fire District, a move aimed at improving long-term service stability. The proposal would shift oversight and funding of fire services. City leaders say annexation could provide more resources and staffing, and the proposal has seen broad support from community members. Mountain Lion Spotted in Palo Alto Neighborhood

Residents in Palo Alto were on alert after a mountain lion was spotted roaming a residential neighborhood: 700 block of North Hampton Drive in North Palo Alto and later reported in the 1900 block of Byron Avenue in the Old Palo Alto neighborhood. Wildlife officials monitored the situation and reminded the public to take precautions, such as keeping pets indoors and avoiding walking alone at night. Sightings like this are not unheard of, given the city’s proximity to open space and foothills. Read more here.

Santa Clara County Schools Named to Distinguished California Schools List 

Just over 400 schools were named to 2026’s California’ Distinguished Schools list, which recognizes exceptional schools that distinguish themselves on the basis of exemplary student outcomes for all students. Of those, 5 were from our local area: Ardis G. Egan Junior High School (Los Altos), Georgina P. Blach Junior High School (Los Altos), Frank S. Greene Jr. Middle School (Palo Alto), Henry M. Gunn High School (Palo Alto), and Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School (Palo Alto). Read more here.
